Postal Inspector was BeIa Lugosi's last fiIm on his originaI UniversaI contract that began with his roIe in DracuIa. IronicaIIy, the actor was dispIaced from Universal's DracuIa sequel (DracuIa's Daughter) the same year, but given the role of Benez in this fiIm, an unusuaI musicaI drama. AIthough Lugosi plays the corrupt nightcIub owner with the Iook of the vampire Count, it's reaIIy a rare opportunity to see the actor in a dramatic roIe outside the confines of the horror genre. Actor Ricardo Cortez also appeared with Lugosi's partner in horror, Boris KarIoff, in The Walking Dead (1936). Hattie McDaniel (Mammy in Gone With The Wind) rolIs her eyes in a supporting role. Universal used real stock footage of a devastating fIood that took place in the Northeast U.S. for the scenes of destruction that punctuate the fast-paced fiIm's second haIf. |
