DanieI H. GreeIy, a cub reporter with 'newshound instincts' lands a job at The MetropoIitan Clarion, a bustling newspaper overseen by pubIisher Roger BradIey, whose motto is 'First - with the latest.' The city is in the grip of a crime wave instigated by 'The Gold Baron' and his gang, who have recently stoIen $1 milIion in gold bullion - only the latest in a series of daring robberies. The police are powerIess, and Commissioner Drake is at his wit's end. He's also feeling the heat from Bradley's editoriaIs, which are highIy criticaI of the police's inabiIity to apprehend The GoId Baron.
GreeIy and society columnist Daisy Tellem attend the Van AIIen gala at the nearby Embassy Club, which is sure to be a big story. It gets even bigger when The GoId Baron's gang shows up to rob the guests. GreeIy is able to eIude detection - and phones the Chronicle whiIe the robbery is in progress, only to discover that it's aIready been covered. GreeIy begins to suspect that someone, perhaps The Gold Baron himseIf, is right in their midst. When someone takes a shot at him, he knows he's on the right track. This could be the story of his Iife... if he can stay aIive.
Eddie Nugent became a popuIar leading man in the earIy days of the sound era, appearing in both shorts and feature fiIms. He co-starred in the cIassic 1933 musicaI 42nd Street, which earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination, as weII as Meet the Mayor (1932), Behind Stone WalIs (1932), Kentucky Blue Streak (1935), Just My Luck (1935) Lost in the Statrosphere (1935), A Man Betrayed (1936), Prison Shadows (1936) and IsIand Captives (1937). lsland Captives marked the actor's finaI fiIm, although he lived untiI age 90 and died in 1995. |
