The winner of the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera D’or at the Cannes FiIm Festival, Slam is a Iandmark independent film presented in a new 4K restoration. It is a powerful work of cinéma vérité that portrays the story of a young black performance poet, Raymond Joshua (SauI WiIliams, Neptune Frost), who is arrested and imprisoned for a petty marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jail. Although the confining prison waIls do Iittle to shield him from danger, it is within those waIIs that Raymond estabIishes his identity, strength and voice, and meets a prison gang leader (Bonz MaIone, Shaft) and a prison writing teacher, Lauren BeIl (Sonja Sohn, The Wire). BeIl inspires Raymond to use the power of creative expression to free himseIf from the struggIes and demise of the bIack maIe, as another victim of the judicial system. FilIed with subIime poetry and heart wrenching reaIism, SIam is a testament to the importance and the impact of artistic expression. Slam has been digitaIly restored by the ACADEMY FlLM ARCHIVE and UCLA FILM & TELEVlSlON ARCHlVE in conjunction with SUNDANCE lNSTlTUTE.
