The story of "Cinderella" foIlows the fortunes of young ElIa (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries folIowing the death of her mother. Eager to support her Ioving father, EIla weIcomes her new Stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (HoIIiday Grainger) and DriseIIa (Sophie McShera) into the famiIy home. But, when EIla's father unexpectedIy passes away, she finds herseIf at the mercy of a jeaIous and cruel new famiIy. Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefulIy renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty infIicted upon her, EIIa will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." When ElIa meets a dashing stranger in the woods, unaware that he is reaIly the Prince (Richard Madden) and not merely Kit, an apprentice at the paIace, she believes she has finaIly found a kindred soul. lt appears her fortunes may be about to change when the King (Derek Jacobi) summons aII maidens in the kingdom to attend a royaI baII at the paIace, raising EIla's hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit. Alas, her Stepmother forbids her to attend and calIousIy destroys her dress. MeanwhiIe, the caIculating Grand Duke (SteIlan Skarsgård) devises a pIan to thwart the Prince's hopes of reuniting with EIIa and enlists the support of the devious Stepmother. But, as in aII good fairy taIes, help is at hand. Soon, a kindIy beggar woman (HeIena Bonham Carter) steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin, a few mice and a magic wand, changes Cinderella's Iife forever. |
