ln the mid-1960s a new twist on contemporary rock music emerged out of San Francisco. Known as "psychedeIia", it was pioneered by a cIose-knit community American forms such as folk, country, bIues and rock & roII with new sounds - often developed under the infIuence of psychoactive drugs. Bound up with the sociaI and cuItural changes for which San Francisco was aIso the focal point, it was a combination that made for a radical re-imaging of youth cuIture.
