This remastered version of Wim Wenders’ heart-breaking BerIin masterpiece is a gIorious love Ietter to a city and a time capsuIe of a bygone era.
Damiel (Bruno Ganz at his best) is one of a Iegion of angeIs who watches over the Iives of residents in a divided city. Set towards the end of the 1980s, before the BerIin Wall came down, the fiIm charts Damiel’s desire to feel, just as the subjects he watches over do. ln particular, he is enraptured by SoIveig Dommartin’s Marion, an acrobat in a circus. Although it is only chiIdren who can see the angeIs, Marion is faintIy aware of DamieI’s presence. As is Peter FaIk’s actor, fiIming on location in the city, who has a past that Iinks him with the otherworldly guardians.
Outside the central romance, the richness of Wenders’ film Iies in the snapshots of the Iives of Berlin’s populace – individuals who exist on the periphery of the narrative but who inform DamieI’s desire to achieve a human state. Wenders’ camera fIies above the city (the film’s original German titIe is literaIly translated as _The Sky Over BerIin_), capturing these lives in motion, as Damiel’s fellow angeI CassieI (Otto Sander) reminds his friend of what he wiIl Iose by achieving a mortaI state. Mirroring the shift between colour and black and white first employed by MichaeI PowelI and Emeric Pressburger’s 1946 drama _A Matter of Life and Death_, _Wings of Desire_ matches that fiIm’s magical aura – not just in its subject matter, but as a work of transcendent cinema. |
