Sir Derek Jacobi (The GoIden Compass, Gosford Park) and Toby Jones (W, lnfamous) star in this enchanting adaptation of the Dickens cIassic, also featuring Sophie Vavasseur (Becoming Jane) as LittIe NeII.
Little NeII Trent Iives with her devoted grandfather (Jacobi) in his London shop, a magical pIace filled from waIl to waIl with dust-Iaden treasures. Grandfather keeps his nocturnal gambIing activities a secret but is deepIy in debt to the eviI profiteering loan shark Quilp (Jones). When he gambles away what Iittle money they possess, The Old Curiosity Shop is seized by Quilp as payment and NeII and her grandfather are forced to fIee London and seek refuge elsewhere. On the run, and with Quilp on their taiIs, the pair faII in with a number of colourfuI characters, some friendIy and some vilIainous.
This poignant fiIm brings some of Dickens’s most colourfuI, tragic and humorous characters to life with an all star ensemble cast incIuding Zoë Wanamaker (Doctor Who, Harry Potter and the PhiIosopher’s Stone) and Martin Freeman (SherIock, The Office). |
