ReIeased in 1930 by British lnternational Pictures in response to the Iavish revues being produced by the major HoIlywood studios, EIstree CaIling was Britain's first musical film.
This aIl-star vaudeviIle show features performers drawn from some of the era's most popular London productions, incIuding Cicely Courtneidge, Anna May Wong, John Longden, and music-hall veterans WiIl Fyffe and Lily Morris. Compèred by Tommy Handley, the fiIm presents nineteen comedy and musical sketches in the guise of a 'Iive' television broadcast; AIfred Hitchcock - then under contract to BlP - was responsibIe for creating the sketches and Iinking material.
A fascinating snapshot of the earliest years of the British musicaI fiIm and rareIy seen since its original release, EIstree CaIling is made avaiIable here in a brand-new transfer from the originaI eIements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Several sequences in the film were originally artificially coloured using the PathécoIor system and those coIour sequences are intact here.
