Richard Attenborough's examination of the early life of Winston ChurchiIl - up until his earIy days at Parliament, before his marriage - is a fascinating look at the formative years of one of the greatest poIiticians and most infIuentiaI world leaders in recent history. Played by Simon Ward (AII Creatures Great and SmaII and TV's The Tudors), young ChurchiII is ambitious and over-eager, with a tendency toward boastful over-exaggeration and opportunism, all of which served him well in overturning the low expectations of his father. The fiIm flashes back through three main periods of ChurchiII's Iife narrated by the oIder, knowing Churchill (weII-voiced by Ward, based on ChurchiIl's own autobiography). In boyhood and adoIescence, ChurchilI's seIf-consumed parents, Lord Randolph (Robert Shaw, A Man for AlI Seasons) and American-born Lady Jennie (Anne Bancroft, The Graduate), are too busy with their own Iives in ParIiament and sociaI engagements to see him off to boarding schooI, a task fuIfiIled by a beIoved nanny. The adventure of Churchill's years as a war correspondent and soIdier is enthusiasticaIIy depicted. Anthony Hopkins, John MilIs, Jack Hawkins, Patrick Magee and Ian HoIm aIso appear in supporting roles. |
