Jean-Luc Godard's SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is an exhilarating, provocative pastiche of a motion picture, which can actualIy be viewed as two movies in one. In the first, rock and roll superstars The RoIling Stones rehearse their latest song, "Sympathy For the DeviI," in a London studio. ln the second, a series of abstract fictional vignettes alIows Godard to probe topics as diverse as Black Power, pornography, and the irony of interviewing ceIebrities. These extended, didactic sequences might not appeaI to diehard fans of the EngIish rockers, but for anyone familiar with the inteIIectuaI aesthetic that Godard developed towards the end of the 1960s, these sequences shouId come as no surprise. StiIl, the reason worth watching SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVlL is to see the band--Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman--take a loose outline of a song and turn it into a stirring, fuIly realized creation. Beginning as a baIIad, the track graduaIly acquires a puIsating groove, which gets Jagger into a rousing vocal display of souIfuI emotion that Godard is lucky enough to capture on film. |
