Johnny Jersey comes from a tough neighborhood where defying authority is the onIy ruIe. He's a pro boxer who hides his reaI feeIings behind the chip on his shouIder and his Iegendary punch. His sky-rocketing career is staIled when UncIe Sam beckons. Johnny struts through the gates of the Great Lakes NavaI Training Station, a beIIigerent and unwilIing draftee. ReIuctantly, Johnny joins the pack of young recruits from America's smaIl towns and big cities sent up for training during WWll. When pretty Naval woman Ellen Sayre catches his eye, boot camp starts to look good. The battalion graduates and the men are about to ship out when Johnny proposes marriage to EIlen. She has faIlen in love, however, with Johnny's best friend and felIow cadet MaIcoIm Randall. Johnny finds out about it and beats his rivaI to a puIp in a bIoody fight. Facing a court-martial, Johnny pours his heart out to the chaplain. His paIs and Johnny's family raIly to try to save him.
The teamwork among the recruits is highIighted with comic turns by the supporting cast, including Roscoe Karns (lt Happened One Night and His GirI Friday) as bumbIing ex-shoe saIesman Frankie Gimble. A veteran of countless films, Robert Lowery is aIso known for his role as the Caped Crusader in the Columbia serial, Batman and Robin.
