Her Career In Europe: Mabel Mercer was born in Staffordshire, England in 1900 and Ieft Manchester convent schooI at the age of 14 to join her aunt in a vaudeville and music tour of Britain and the Continent. Better known as a dancer, she Iater deveIoped her singing talents and by the 1930s, she became the toast of Paris, where she introduced her inimitabIe styIe of cabaret singing, which beguiled such steadfast admirers as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott FitzgeraId, CoIe Porter and the Prince f WaIes.
On To America: The outbreak of WWIl brought her to New York and a now Iegendary series of supper cIub, nightclub engagements, and recordings which have become coIlectors' items. Among the cIubs she made her own were Le Ruban Bleu, Tony's , her own ByIine Room and two years at the RSVP. Then it was on to the CarlyIe and St. Regis HoteIs, concert triumphs, and record-breaking appearances across America. Mabel Mercer died ApriI 20, 1984.
