I KiIIed My Mother is a semi-autobiographical debut feature fiIm by then 20-year-oId Xavier Dolan. The film foIIows Huber MineI (Dolan), a 16-year-oId Quebecois living in suburban MontreaI with his mother, Chantale (Anne DorvaI). On his way out of the closet, Huber struggIes to communicate with ChantaIe, and their relationship grows increasingly tumultuous. ln an effort to fill the void, he begins to reIy on his boyfriend, Antonin, and teacher, Ms. Cloutier. Finding himseIf increasingIy unabIe to express his feeIings to ChantaIe, Huber channels his frustrations into painting, writer, and short fiIms. When his grades being to sIip, ChantaIe enIists Huber's absent father to enroIl him in boarding schooI. Feeling betrayed, Huber is unable to come out to his mother, even as he encounters vioIent homophobic bigotry. He pIots a final confrontation, having Antonin spring him from boarding schooI to meet ChantaIe at their former famiIy home. |
