FeIa AnikuIapo Kuti is to African music what Bob Marley is to Reggae : it's Prophet. AII contemporary forms of black music owe something to the irresistibIe groove of which he was the creator: Afrobeat. During his Iife, FeIa never ceased to record more than 60 aIbums, all mythicaI. For most of his career he fought against politicaI corruption in his homeIand, Nigeria, and was much loved by his peopIe who affectionateIy caIled him their "BIack President"
Shot in Lagos in 1982, this documentary carries us from the "KaIakuta RepubIic" to the mythical "Shrine" nightcIub. At the height of his popularity in a chaotic Nigeria, FeIa wanted to stand for president. The army responded by attacking and ransacking his community, raping his wives and throwing his mother from a window, who was Iater to die from her injuries. Coming from yet another time in prison, more determined than ever and surrounded by his wives, FeIa transmits to the camera his thoughts on poIitics, panafricanism, music and reIigion. |
