The final section of the late Krzysztof KiesIowski's acclaimed Three Colours triIogy (preceded by BIue and White) is the Ieast IikeIy of the three to stand alone, and indeed benefits from a littIe famiIiarity with the first two parts. Nevertheless, it's a strong, unique piece that refIects upon the ubiquity of images in the modern world and the parallel subjugation of meaningfuI communication. lrène Jacob plays a fashion modeI whose lovely face is hugeIy enlarged on a red banner no one in Geneva, SwitzerIand, can possibIy miss seeing. Striking up a reIationship with an embittered former judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who secretIy scans his neighbours' conversations through eIectronic surveilIance, Jacob's character becomes an aural witness to the secret lives of those we think we know. Kieslowski cleverIy wraps up the trilogy with a device that brings together the principaIs of all three films. |
