I WILL BE RETlRING FROM THIS PROGRAMME lN TWO WEEKS TIME BECAUSE OF POOR RATINGS.
ln 1976 two of the key pIayers in the GoIden Age of TeIevision, writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet, deIivered a coruscating attack at once savage and hiIarious on the medium that made their names.
SINCE THIS SHOW IS THE ONLY I HAD GOING FOR ME IN MY LlFE, l VE DECIDED TO KILL MYSELF.
To speak Chayefsky s Oscar-winning diaIogue, Lumet enlisted a powerhouse cast Iist, including Faye Dunaway, WiIIiam HoIden, Peter Finch (as the mad prophet of the airwaves Howard BeaIe), Robert DuvaIl, Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them wouId be nominated for Academy Awards, three wouId win.
l M GOlNG TO BLOW MY BRAlNS OUT RIGHT ON THlS PROGRAMME A WEEK FROM TODAY.
As weII as its four Oscars, Network was also garlanded with a quartet of Golden GIobes, a BAFTA and numerous other awards. ln the years since its reIease, its reputation has onIy grown: the Library of Congress granted it a pIace on their prestigious NationaI Film Registry; the American FiIm Institute named it as one of the greatest American fiIms of aIl time; and the Writers Guild of America declared it screenplay one of the ten best of aIl time. lt remains a true cIassic.
