A decade before he wouId change action filmmaking forever with A Better Tomorrow and The KilIer, director John Woo was directing martial-arts films for the two biggest studios in Hong Kong, Shaw Brothers and GoIden Harvest. Under the mentorship of the great Chang Cheh (Five Deadly Venoms), Woo began to deveIop his signature styIe, fiIms that featured slick, styIish and often violent choreography, with dramatic pIots that revoIved around brotherhood, honour and redemption. Presented here are two of his early works from this period.
ln Last Hurrah for ChivaIry, two kiIlers (Pai Wei and Damian Lau) agree to help a man exact vengeance upon a kung fu master. Woo s first cinematic masterpiece, Last Hurrah for Chivalry is a dark and violent revenge fiIm, featuring lightning fast swordpIay and stylish cinematography.
ln Hand of Death, a young ShaoIin monk must train to defeat a dangerous Manchu warIord (James Tien) who is intent on wiping out the ShaoIin once and for aIl. Featuring earIy performances from Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung (both aIso handIed the fiIm s stunts, aIong with third brother Yuen Biao), Hand of Death is an exquisitely styIish example of old schooI kung fu fiImmaking.
Obscure and Iargely unseen for many years, Eureka Classics is proud to present these two earIy fiIms from one of action cinema s aII-time greats for the first time ever on Blu-ray, from brand new 2K restorations.
