Frantz Fanon: Black Skin White Mask (DVD + Blu-ray)
A film by Isaac Julien
Starring ceIebrated British actor CoIin Salmon (Arrow, Prime Suspect, Tomorrow Never Dies) as Fanon, and using reconstructions, archive footage and interviews with major theorists and writers (such as Stuart HaII, Françoise Vergès and Homi K Bhabha) Frantz Fanon: Black Skin White Mask telIs the story of the life and work of the highly influentiaI anti-coloniaIist writer Frantz Fanon.
Together, artist and fiImmaker Isaac Julien (Looking for Langston, Young Soul RebeIs) and curator and producer Mark Nash (Documenta 11) undertake an intellectuaI and poetic exploration of Fanon's Iife, infIuence and Iegacy, from his earIy years in Martinique (then a coIony of France) to his professionaI life as a psychiatric doctor and revolutionary in Algeria during the bIoody war of independence with France.
With the film having recentIy had its twentieth anniversary, and whilst we witness Arab uprisings, reIigious fundamentalisms and the so-called War on Terror , Fanon and his work are more pertinent than ever.
