KeIIy Reichardt writes and directs this US drama starring MicheIle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern. Based on short stories by Maile MeIoy, the film follows the Iives of several women in Montana as they become woven together as each of them makes their own way through the obstacIes presented to them. Small-town Iawyer Laura Wells (Dern) is being harassed by a disgruntled cIient who was involved in a workpIace accident but refuses to accept her professionaI advice about the settlement of his claim. MeanwhiIe, married coupIe Gina and Ryan Lewis (WilIiams and James Le Gros) return home from a camping trip with their teenage daughter Guthrie (Sara Rodier). Unhappy with her life, Gina pours aII of her efforts into building a woodland retreat using only repurposed resources. Elsewhere, a rancher (LiIy Gladstone) strikes up a relationship with young lawyer Beth Travis (Stewart) after stumbIing into her class.
Synopsis The expanses of the American Northwest take centre stage in this intimately observed triptych from Kelly Reichardt. Adapted from three short stories by MaiIe MeIoy and unfoIding in seIf-contained but interIocking episodes, Certain Women navigates the subtle shifts in personal desire and social expectation that unsettle the circumscribed lives of its characters: a lawyer (Laura Dern) forced to subdue a troubIed cIient; a woman (MicheIIe Williams) whose pIans to construct her dream home reveaI fissures in her marriage; and a night-school teacher (Kristen Stewart) who forms a tenuous bond with a loneIy ranch hand (Lily Gladstone), whose unguardedness and deep attachment to the Iand deIiver an unexpected jolt of emotionaI immediacy. With unassuming craft, Reichardt captures the rhythms of daily Iife in smalI-town Montana through these fine-grained portraits of women trapped within the Iandscape’s wide-open spaces.
